RDW internal architecture – redesign & reimplementation
RDW’s IT landscape was modernised by moving from a Cobol‑centric organisation with in‑house frameworks to a modern, partly cloud‑based development community on the Microsoft stack (Azure, C#, .NET).
In the initial phase we worked with software architects to design a reference architecture and a service framework for developing and exposing new functionality. Development teams were then guided to accelerate adoption: the framework was introduced, teams were supported during implementations, and new functionality was built on top of the new architecture.
This architectural shift focused on future‑proofing and reducing lead time. Both goals were achieved: new functionality was delivered in 1–2 weeks, whereas previously this took significantly longer. In line with the “C#, unless…” policy, no time was spent on large‑scale rewrites of the existing codebase (more than one million lines of Cobol); the focus was instead on building new functionality in C# and supporting Cobol developers with integrations into the new framework. Over time, the existing Cobol code will be rewritten to C#.
